A big problem is that no Etch machines are alike. They can have different dev packages installed, use different gcc as default, have packported or manually installed packages and so on. It is very difficult to troubleshoot/replicate instabilities and random bugs in such a landscape. And then we have all those who use Ubuntu, Fedora/RH, Suse .. > but I'll admit that sometimes it's not trivial. Yups, It should be a lot more trivial. And it should be possible to compile on any mainstream distribution without fiddling with source package versions and gcc versions. It should even be easy to play with different package versions, like the kernel. mvh Nils :-) |
