Gimp 2.9 is getting ever closer to releasing tarballs, and is already fairly stable. It would be really nice to have ufraw able to pass a 16 bit image into gimp instead of having it pass over only an 8 bit image, losing up to 8 bits of color information off modern camera raws.

What needs to happen in ufraw in order to support that?

The GIMP plugin supports sending 16-bit images to GIMP when built with GIMP 2.9+ already.
