You should play with video output drivers, cache and all other settings in the video section of preferences dialogue. Also you could have a look at the mplayer log to see, if mplayer displays some errors.

It seems that I have a system issue on my installation, vlc has the same while playing divx or dvds.
And the direct Render option was not a good idea. :-(

Lol what happens after you choose "Direct Render"? No problems with that option so far. Have you installed the nvidia driver for your device?
Oh and do you use Compiz?

Found it...
After installing all on a new system the jerking is gone.
Now I have a ~150ms delay between video an audio, but the -delay 0.15 option for mplayer solvs this issue too.

After a view minutes tv-viewer is starting jerking.
It starts jerking for a view seconds, later all is normal and then it starts again.
My test system is an AMD 32bit 2Gh, 1GB Nvidia geforce 6200, Hauppauge PVR 150 running Ubuntu 9.04
