Ah yeah. The tux. I have used it last year to show in a class I'm teaching. Would be nice if the little critter had some more processing power. E.g. by adding a raspberry pi and a wifi dongle into it. (btw: apart from the one I'm showing, I also have one still in the box with plastic around it; 2nd batch; if anyone is interested in buying drop me a note). Frans |

Hello, I wonder if there is a way to schedule a gadget to run at a given hour ? I don't really want to get the weather forecast every hour, once or maybe twice a day it's more reasonable. Thanks, vds |

Hello Jan, speechd seems to be a very good project, and I'm already dreaming about his integration with Tux Droid ! Acapela TTS is a big problem for us for months as the library isn't compatible with 64bits OS. Moreover, it's not an open-source library, and is not really in the Tux Droid philosophy. In January or something, we started a new project called 'tuxosl-ose', a fork of 'tuxosl' without the Acapela interface. The goal was to be able to create new interfaces for open-source TTS, such as festival. Unfortunately, we don't had time to work on it, and nothing has been done for now. Speechd is another approach of the problem, and this approach looks me very fine. This will maybe be a good opportunity for us to finalizing and to (definitively) solve the TTS 64bits problems. I'll read the documentation about the project, try to get it working and test it. We have also to analyze this new approach, and think about the best way to fix this problem. Anyway, thank you very much for this mail, and I hope we'll work with you in a close future. Hello, one of our project is called Speech Dispatcher http://www.freebsoft.org/speechd. Speech Dispatcher works as a client/server and communicates trough TCP with python or java bindings. I think that it will be not so difficult to replace Acapela tts by speech dispatcher for Linux for now for someone who knows very well the TuxDroid API of course. This solution can bring more advantages: - TuxDroid could use different TTS like Festival, Flite, Espeak etc - TuxDroid could speak in different languages and with different voices in the same time, see SSIP protocol of Speech Dispatcher If anyone finds time for it we would like to help him regarding Speech Dispatcher know-how. Good morning. I recently bought a tux droid \o/ After searching a bit in the documentation about how programming it, it finally comes up that there was no API written for BASH. I've already written some applications using netcat to forward instructions to the droid but i want to create now some interactive applications using buttons, light detector and microphone. The problem i'm facing is i couldn't find any information on how is working the events system. I looked at the TuxAPI.js and read the function concerning the callback of events.. but the only call is made to status/events? The real problem is that when i'm calling the status/events? page, it always return me the "failed" status... and i don't find any explanation. I started to look at the /status/request_all? and find timers of the last event and booleans but every buttons seem to be on the same handler since when i push on the right wing, the delay counter of the left wings start back at 0 too. Can anyone provide some information or experience about this ?

It seems this documentation is out of date. For the first production, the firmware was not really stable, and many changes was made on it. That's why the starter guide recommands to update the firmware first. But now, the firmware are mature. They're stable, and are not changed often. The new Tuxs are uptodate, so you don't need to update them. Thanks for this remarks. We'll update this documentation soon. Hi again, I wrote the doc at tuxisalive.com/getting-started and I don't understand why we should begin with flashing a new firmware on a device that we have bought and installed five minutes ago; so is it mandatory because the Tux is empty and will do nothing as long as you haven't flash it, or can we try it first asis, using Weather or another gadget, then eventually flashing a new firmware than the 0.4 that seems to be provided with the tuxsetup 1.3.19 deb/tgz pack ? Hello, Thank you for your feedbacks. Tuxsetup2.1.0 is a beta version. I try to change all the installation PATHs (as you've seen) from /opt to /usr/... It's not easy to do, because many soft has hardcoded path. - Concerning the problems with the control center and the TTS voice, I don't have seen this problem during my tests. But it's good to know, and I'll clean my system and test it again. - For the tarball, you're right : it's not gzipped. I'll fixed that for the nexts versions. - Again, the problem with the attitunes and gadgets list on the control center is quiete strange. I'll dig it and try to find the problem. - For the server status, there is two logfiles located on /var/log : httpserver (log created when the server starts and load the resources) tuxhttpserver (server activity, such as a client connection / disconnection, etc). Hi list, I've bought my Tuxdroid in Feb. 2007. Host PC is a Dell D600 laptop running Mandriva Linux 2009.0. After having played with V1.3-RC2 for some time, I switched to V2. First I used V2.0.x but yesterday I found 2.1.0 on the Kysoh download server and installed that version on the laptop. The idea to use a webserver to channel all traffic to the droid is excellent! I had always problems with the V1 tuxd dying before anything could be done (Ubuntu problem also on Mandriva? Seems a udev problem to me). Followed the guidelines in the Howto section of the wiki. Download worked fine but the tarballs seem NOT to be gzipped. I had to unpack with plain 'tar xvf', 'tar zxvf' throws an error at me. All firmwares were updated using the new tuxup. For some reason the install path seems to have changed from /opt in V2.0.x to /usr in V2.1.0. Should not really matter but I'm not sure this is applied all over the distribution. (since I have several problems to get Controlcenter to do what it should do and the DutchBelgium voice seems not to work). Some other ramblings: The (US) voices only work after playing one of the attitunes with the Attitune Creator and thaae back to 'Control the Tuxdroid'. In the Control_Center I cannot see any local gadgets and/or attitumes. I'm quite sure I had them in the V2.0.x control center. The gadgets are located in he 'MyTux' folder but are not shown in Controlcenter. Why? Is the (hardwired???) path in the Controlcenter wrong? The 'online' gadgets/attitunes show a window with icons but whatever I try to click or drag to the 'my preferences' on the left, I get an error about a wrong URL. Is it possible to add a 'status' to the tuxhttpserver? I have installed the init script and can use 'service tuxhttpserver stop/start' but I would like to be able to check the status before I restart. BTW does the server dies when the Controlcenter is closed? I have no knowledge at all of C++, Java or python and have not the faintest idea where to look for a config file (if any...). Thanks for any assistance! Egbert Jan (NL) |

Hello Yellow Penguin, > - why does the TD-dongle blocks the PC starting process when inserted in > its > USB-slot before the PC power-button is pressed ? Is this normal ? That's not normal indeed. I think this is due to the PC mainboard, or bios version, or something like this. Usually, there is no problems to start the PC with the dongle connected. But on some computers, you can't. I've this kind of problems on my desktop PC at home : When the dongle is plugged when I start the computer, the BIOS returns a strange error : "No keyboard found". Maybe you've plugged the dongle on an USB-slot on the front ? You can try to connect it on an other USB slot and see if the problem persist. > - how to be sure of the communication between dogle and penguin: isn't > there > any simple commandline test we can do to check ? BTW, how far or high > should > the dongle be positionned to be sure that the Tux is seeing him ? You can see if the communication has been established with the dongle's LEDs. When the communication is established, the LEDs will flicker quickly. Otherwise, they're flickers slowly (ca 1 cycle per second). > - is it normal that there isn't any shortcut-button on the Gnome desktop ? > Is this due to the fact that I installed it from the commandline using > dpkg > -i ? To create a shortcut on the desktop, the installer must know the user. Technically, this is very difficult to do, because the installation must be done as root. You'll find shortcut in the gnome main menu : Applications / Accessories. You can create a desktop shortcut directly from here. > Here is also a 1st test I did; I hope anything is correct; I will anyway > appreciate any feedback: > > > # A newbie's TuxDroid Nothing to say, except : perfect ;) 1. tuxsetup 2.x doesn't install on this Ubuntu Feisty PC I still have some troubles to make an installer for Ubuntu < 8.04 : - openJDK can't be found on the repositories. So, the dependancies list must be changed to install sun-java6-jre instead of the open version. - libtuxdriver.so has been compiled with a too high version of libc6. We need to recompile it with a earlier version. I'm working on it, so I hope I'll be able to release a new package for Ubuntu < 8.04 soon. 2. I don't understand the last msg... (> [25665.123126] usb 3-1: usbfs: interface 0 claimed by snd-usb-audio while > 'tuxd' sets config #1) The dongle is a composite device. When you plug it, the kernel will load the drivers, and the drivers will try to claims the interfaces. What happens is that snd-usb-audio (the audio driver for USB sound cards) tries to claim the interface0 ("Audio Control" interface defined in the USB descriptor) while the daemon try to set the configuration 1 (the active configuration for this USB device). This warning is due to this concurencial access. But that's not very important. 3. it seems something is really started! Indeed, tuxosl has been started. It means you can use the TTS engine. You also can verify the other daemon (tuxd). Usually, I use the command `ps -ef |grep XXX` to find an XXX process. For example, to find all the process running for Tux, I use `ps -ef |grep tux`. If you use this command, you should see "tuxd". But I see you're using an HID dongle. Maybe it will be incompatible with the actual tuxsetup, which is made to work with libusb. If tuxd won't start (you can try to launched it with "tuxd -debug", and see what happens), you can compile the last version from SVN : http://svn.tuxisalive.com/software_suite_v1/daemon/trunk. (build-essentials and libusb-dev are required to compile the daemon). Monday I will create a final version of tuxsetup1.3. I'll also try to fix the problems with Ubuntu < 8.04. ks156 |
