#2 fonts using option-key ?

Say a font is specified in Options>Font>Text which requires the use
of the option key to enter some characters. (For instance, an SIL
IPA font on a Mac.) Transcriber appears to trap any keystroke when
the option key is held down (some such as option-9 etc alter the
display). How is a special character to be entered in the
transcription (one which require stheoption key)?
