It's good to hear that you finally have a workaround. Sorry for the long delay with my answer. One last suggestion would be: if the remote host has Perl, then you might be able to use the smp method instead of sm. The smp method uses a Perl script for doing base64 encoding. However, I got a message saying that the Perl code is buggy. I'm waiting for a copyright assignment before applying the patch.
