These non-literal associations of concepts <ach></ach>that force the reader to see real and true relationships, are called metaphors. The world can be seen as a machine, an organism, or a consciousness, and the <ace></ace>well-known figure of speech "pars <acc></acc>pro toto" brings forward (metaphor) <acw></acw>essential properties of it, without being identified with it. It is impossible to construct <acb></acb>world views <acw></acw>without using <acs></acs>"root <acb></acb>metaphors." To see total reality as a cloud of atoms, as a field of forces, <acd></acd>as a stream or as a substance, as a machine or <acv></acv>as an organism, <acz></acz>as a clock work or as a piece of <acw></acw>art is using metaphors. A metaphor can <acw></acw>also <acv></acv>be <acy></acy>dangerous because of its inspiring power. If we know however what the images <acv></acv>mean we can use their heuristic and interpretative power without danger. They can help <acs></acs>us grasp certain aspects of reality that we would <acy></acy>otherwise neglect <acr></acr>completely. Isolated and simplistic metaphors, certainly when they are taken <acp></acp>literally, are dangerous and are better avoided. </div> |
