It's literally the last thing I'd want to do. I'm sorry to trouble you. I based my decision to write you off of my own observations of what compilers other distros were using over the years compared to what the latest gcc release version was. When I last checked, which was when gcc 10 was released, they were lagging about 4-5 versions behind. I didn't imagine distro maintainers suddenly got a fire lit under their pants that caused them all to update their compiler versions so. I will not remove something that is used widespread. C++ has had some drastic development over the last years. You really need a recent compiler to be able to compile modern C++... so spur up. I've attached the build log (I ran it with make -j100 so gcc would find more errors than the one above). % gcc --version gcc (Debian 6.3.0-18+deb9u1) 6.3.0 20170516 To be fair, it is an older version, with most distros running 7.5 or higher. I just tried the latest git. It will not build. Log output is below. In short, you're asking for the latest C++ standard and my Gcc, at version 6.3, is too old. But actually it seems odd to me that you'd ask for version 20 considering that it's only available on the latest version of gcc (version 11). "GCC supports most of the changes in the new specification." https://github.com/gcc-mirror/gcc/blob/master/gcc/doc/standards.texi Even experimental support was only added in version 8. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=GCC-Patches-CPP2A-CPP20 llvm, at version 13 now, added c++20 support at version 11. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Clang-std-cpp-20-Added I'd suggest going for C++17 instead of c++20 if possible. Even when I upgrade my system, I will most certainly not be using a bleeding edge complier. It's not that I'm a coward, it's that I don't have the amount of time to trouble shoot a new compiler -- I'm already a bit overwhelmed by the many other bugs I need to prove on the latest versions of applications. To everyone still out there listening, I has been a while and Toppler has been rotting away slowly. But finally I made a new release that brings Toppler back to the present. I did change a lot over the past 2 months: The most important change is a port to SDL2 with the accompanying benefits: - proper full-screen support - resizeable window - variable aspect ratio properly used (instead of letterboxing) so you can finally enjoy Toppler on a widescreen I did improve the visuals of the game quite a bit - new brick textures that look quite a bit more 3d - shadows behind objects (robots, tower elements) - objects get darker as they recced behind the tower - better quality for the colour reduced data resulting in all around better looking graphics (only slightly though) - improved bonus level graphics (better horizontal match, better antialiasing) - fix a bug in sprite rendering that resulted in an strange looking edge for objects - smoother animation for the robots with twice the frame-rate and also slightly improved animations Under the hood - Drop autoconf stuff and use a makefile instead - fix all warnings - cleanups inside the datafile creation tools - remove the worst non-c++ stuff and replace by c++ nicer constructs I think the code looks much better now - datafile optimisations (a slight bit smaller though that got eaten up by the graphics improvements from above) Organisational - moved to gitlab. the website is now https://gitlab.com/roever/toppler/ - use the gitlab ticket system please - the separate projects for levels and data are gone, it all is now part of the main repository and the datafile can be build using the included makefile There are still a few smaller bugs left because a lot was changed, but you might want to have a look. IIRC, the new levels for toppler depend on that behavior not existing. I personally don't think its that important to make toppler identical, but its not my decision. Thanks, David |

Already a longer time ago I discovered a pint where 'toppler' behaves different than the orifginal game (the MS DOS version is the one I refer to): In the original game, elevators which multiple stops could not be moved again is they have stopped at the intermediate or top stop. You had to wait until they come done by themselves before you could move again. To move to the top, you had to hold down the 'up'-key when they pass the intermediate stop. |

I want to request, that `cremission` by default creates the mission in the current directory and not in ~/.toppler/, or that it accepts a command line argument for the target directory. Reason: As it is now, there is no "clean" build of missions possible, since it tinkers around with the home directoriy and does not stay in a build directory. It even can be seen in http://toppler.sourceforge.net/repos/levels/Makefile, that some ugly hack is needed: ``` [...] rm ${HOME}/.toppler/t mv "${HOME}/.toppler/Mission 1.ttm" m1.ttm [...] ``` |

And there is another problem I stumple upon: I was making an arch linux package which provides the individual tower files of the pre-created missions (for the case that someone wants to dig into them), and also creates a single mission for each single tower (in order to directly be able to play a specific tower). But the missions I get by `cremission` have only broken towers: ### Get sources: darcs clone --set-scripts-executable --lazy http://toppler.sourceforge.net/repos/toppler/ darcs clone --set-scripts-executable --lazy http://toppler.sourceforge.net/repos/levels/ ### Build `decl.o`: cd toppler ./autogen.sh ./configure make toppler ### Build a mission: cd ../levels make cremission ./cremission test_mission 80 mission1/m1t1 Creates a file `~/.toppler/test_mission.ttm` (file attached). Now I launch `toppler` and run "test_mission" -> I get an empty tower, called "nameless tower" (once I even got a segmentation fault) (Screenshot attached). Any idea? The `toppler` executable I use to play the game is the one from the stable source (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/toppler/toppler-1.1.6.tar.gz), since, as I wrote in my other email, installation from the darcs repository fails. Could that be the problem, that missions created with `cremission` are only compatible with exact the same game binary which was also the bases for creating `cremission`? Is there another way to create missions from tower files from a script? |

Ahoj, I currently try to build toppler for myself from the darcs repositories. I use the precompiled datafile `toppler.dat`, since I do not know how to build it by myself (there is a manual blender run required to get images for the submarine and for fish, and I do not know which parameters are needed -- so I suggest that there will be some automation also included to automatically generate the submarine's and the fish's images from the blender file). So, cd-ing to `po`: `make DESTDIR=/tmp install`: ``` /tmp/usr/share make: /tmp/usr/share: No such file or directory make: *** [Makefile:197: install-data-yes] Error 127 ``` Creating the directory `/tmp/usr/share` and then `make DESTDIR=/tmp install`: ``` /tmp/usr/share make: /tmp/usr/share: Permission denied make: *** [Makefile:197: install-data-yes] Error 127 ``` --> it seems that it wants to _execute_ /tmp/usr/share. HI, I've been enjoying the game but I can't figure out how to complete some of the levels, it looks as though a riser (the thing that rises you up to the top is missing on some of the levels. I'm sorry, I really should give you the names of the levels but I don't have time to play up to them at this point in time. They are in mission 1 or 2. I'm not saying this is a bug, I think I'm not seeing something or am unaware of something. Thanks |

Mission concept - make a Donkey Kong-like mission. If necessary I could post the Level1 prototype here. I need help positioning the rollers properly. Lack of slopes (90* or 45* "chipped" tiles) and "ropes"/"ladders" (climbable objects) hinders this, but I think I'm gonna try it anyway. I tried making a "stack" of balls, but it creates a major start delay. I see it as a black tower, with a single tall pillar or stack of "steps" being both Left and Right sides. Also, I have an idea - make width of towers changeable in LvlEd, being 16-64 with increment 4. Last one: The character in this version makes me think of SUSE's Geeko, therefore Geeko, therefore the aforementioned mission could be named Geeko Strong. |

Hi. I find side+fire to be uncomfortable for jumping. Will the game ever have Jump as a separate button? Both ENTER and SPACE act like a Fire key. Why not make SPACE a Jump key? This totally yucks me off. |

I have just uploaded a file for 1.1.4.tar.gz. This release contains a number of patches, including a rewritten input system that should fix the joystick issues and a number of other small fixes. It should look fairly similar from a user point of view. Works on Linux and OS/X (aren't really set up to build or try on Windows I'm afraid). I'd appreciate people testing it. Thanks. |

Hi there, I've been preparing a toppler package for Fedora, and I had to fix/tweak a few things along the way. Here are the patches against latest release (1.1.3) along with some explanations: - toppler-1.1.3-create_hiscores_file.patch : Creating the highscores file if it doesn't exist allows to not ship it in the package, and thus preserve it across package update. - toppler-1.1.3-fix_buffer_overflow_leveleditor_help.patch : Fixes a buffer overflow when displaying the help menu in the level editor. - toppler-1.1.3-fix_czech_locale.patch : Changes czech locale from cz to cs (it seems already fixed in cvs). - toppler-1.1.3-fix_highscore_lockfile_creation.patch : Specify a mode when creating the highscores lock file. - toppler-1.1.3-move_hiscores_to_own_dir.patch : The highscores dir needs to be writable with random filenames, so it's better to have a toppler specific dir. I would be glad if these patches can be considered for inclusion in the next release. 2 others things I've changed but not through patches : - Some files are not encoded in UTF-8 (AUTHORS, ChangeLog, toppler.6). It would be nice to convert them. - The desktop file specifies the Application category, which is deprecated and should be removed. Regards, Xavier |

Crash happens in scr_regensprites because SDL_CreateRGBSurface returns NULL which causes a NULL pointer dereferencing later. It looks like the surfaces which are created in scr_regensprites aren't freed. Additionally, I'm suggesting that the return value of SDL_CreateRGBSurface and other functions are checked for success.
