Forgot to mention, I do use SimpleScripts to manage my Tikis on Bluehosts. It works really well. From: Marc Laporte [mailto:ma...@ma...] Sent: Wednesday, January 11, 2012 11:38 AM To: Tiki users mailing list Cc: tik...@li... Subject: Re: [Tikiwiki-users] Alternative to BlueHost for hosting a dozen Tiki sites Sorry you are getting this. The shared hosting industry is frustrating because they all make these promises and somehow, they don't clearly advertise these limitations... Price competition is so intense that they can't/don't offer good sevice. In 2009, I got the following from Bluehost: "We have a Target Performance Goal (TPG) for all accounts to have a maximum of 50,000 files on the account. At this time we ask that you please streamline your files and have only files used for your website with a maximum of 50,000 files on the account. If you need assistance with removing these files or to help troubleshoot the reason for this problem we will be happy to assist you in this process." I had a large number of small files (it was not a Tiki app though). I got it down to below 50k and all was OK. That limit seems to be 200k nowadays: http://www.bluehost.com/cgi/info/terms.html Tiki is roughly 10k of files, and way more if you install via SVN Some thoughts: I remember deleting an unused table from tiki.sql Perhaps we should review all the tables and see if they are still needed. If you had one Tiki with that amount of data and traffic, it would fit quite well in their advertised service. I would suggest answering to them with the number of tables with data vs without data. If you deleted the unused tables, you'd likely be below the limit. However, I suspect they would still want to warn you for something else. So, please ask them to identify the scripts/actions that are using too many resources, so we can look into optimizing them. At least, they should be able to say which Tiki instance is using the most resources. Softaculous is looking good as well. Although BlueHost advertises their service as being "unlimited", it turns out that if you read the fine print, there are some pretty severe limits, and I am hitting them. I just received the message below: --- Dear Alain: It has come to our attention that your site is using an excessive amount of MySQL resources on your BlueHost.com account. This is causing performance problems on your website as well as for other customers that are on this server. It can cause our servers to crash and cause additional downtime. Our research shows that server performance degrades when the MySQL usage is over 1000 tables and/or 3 GB on a single account or 1000 tables and/or 2 GB on a single database. In order to ensure optimal performance for your account and the others in your shared hosting environment, we request that you reduce the MySQL usage on your account to under these limits by 01/17/2012. Your account information: Total MySQL Database Size: 161.23 MB Total MySQL Tables: 2226 --- In other words, they give me 1 week to "fix" this, or else (actually, it doesn't say or else what, but I don't want to chance it). Is it me or is this message bogus? Sure, my account has 2226 tables, but most of them are really small, and only occupy a total of 0.16G (which is much, much less than their 3G limit)! And these are fairly low traffic sites. For example, for the month of January, the total average page views was 1135 for all 8 sites, and the total average number of daily hits was 9910. Doesn't seem like something that should stress a shared server too much. Anyways, I am now looking for an alternative to BlueHost Does anybody have a suggestion? Thx.
