This works around the issue by avoiding the crash, but I'm still not able to input some composite characters (option-u, for instance): the keyboard input is ignored. (Shift-option-u does work.) Composite characters and Unicode are surprisingly difficult to manage in Cocoa; I've spent a number of hours investigating this and was not able to find any solution to the question.
