Category: 47. Win Fonts Group: obsolete: 8.5b3 >Status: Closed Resolution: Fixed Priority: 8 Private: No Submitted By: Konstantin Khomoutov (flatworm) Assigned to: Pat Thoyts (patthoyts) Summary: Tiny fonts in Windows console window Initial Comment: Console window has unreadable tiny fonts in Windows wish built with VC6 using the standard makefile.vc (with OPTS=symbols). The system is WinXP SP2 Pro (Russian). Screen resolution: 1280x1024 % winfo pixels . 1i 96 (which corresponds to the system setting) In the freshly started wish85g.exe: % console eval { foreach f [font names] { puts "$f\n[font config $f]" } } fixed -family Courier -size 7 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 TkConsoleFont -family Courier -size 7 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 oemfixed -family Terminal -size 9 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 TkDefaultFont -family Tahoma -size 8 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 TkMenuFont -family Tahoma -size 8 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 ansifixed -family Courier -size 7 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 systemfixed -family Fixedsys -size 10 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 TkHeadingFont -family Tahoma -size 8 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 device -family System -size 10 -weight bold -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 TkTooltipFont -family Tahoma -size 8 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 defaultgui -family {MS Shell Dlg} -size 8 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 TkTextFont -family Tahoma -size 8 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 ansi -family {MS Sans Serif} -size 8 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 TkCaptionFont -family Tahoma -size 8 -weight bold -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 system -family System -size 10 -weight bold -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 TkSmallCaptionFont -family Tahoma -size 8 -weight bold -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 TkFixedFont -family Courier -size 7 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 TkIconFont -family Tahoma -size 8 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 So while the system fonts have (the default) size of 8 console font is 7 which is too small. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Pat Thoyts (patthoyts) Date: 2009-10-29 11:09 Message: I have changed the fix here and backported this to 8.5.8. The earlier hack of ignoring tmInternalLeading for fixed fonts lead to trouble elsewhere (much as expected). However, it seems that instead of reading the current text metrics of the system provided fixed stock font we can get a better result by requesting a font by setting just the minimin fields in the LOGFONT structure. This then gets the font resolution system to hand us something that is equivalent to the stock font (as we make basically the same request as the stock font creation code). The result is sensible on Russian and English systems and avoids messing about with the leading values. It is notable that for some fonts (eg: ansifixed) the output of [font actual] and [font configure] are different. This is due to the font subsystem returning a 'best match' and not an exact match. When the system responds with a bitmap font for Courier then we get a 10pt font even though the request was for a 7pt font. This is how Tk 8.4 evaded the issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Don Porter (dgp) Date: 2008-12-21 20:24 Message: Need a backport for 8.5.6 ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: SourceForge Robot (sf-robot) Date: 2008-11-02 02:21 Message: This Tracker item was closed automatically by the system. It was previously set to a Pending status, and the original submitter did not respond within 14 days (the time period specified by the administrator of this Tracker). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Pat Thoyts (patthoyts) Date: 2008-10-03 15:26 Message: It turns out that English windows has a tmInternalLeading value of 0 while on Russian windows it is 3 for the font returned as ANSI_FIXED_FONT. In each case, we calculate the pixel height as tmAscent+tmDescent-tmInternalLeading (as described in MSDN) and so get a pixel height of 13 (which works out as 9 point) on English systems but 9 pixels (whcih is 7 point) on Russian. About the only thing I can think of to fix this is to not deduct the tmInternalLeading value for fixed pitch fonts. If we dont subtract the internal leading for all fonts, then most of them look too big (like TkDefaultFont, so button text gets too large). However, just twiddling fixed fonts is hacking the symptoms really. The effect of this issue is to make the console too small and the activestate installer has tiny text too if you are using Russian windows. I learnt to read Cyrillic to try to resolve this. Just thought I'd mention that. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Goodwin Lawlor (glawlor) Date: 2008-03-25 11:05 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1323571 Originator: NO It's a different issue but it's connected since it was the presence of consolas on a systems that was causing this bug (I think - is it something else or is this the cause?) I had a go at adding font selection to the console here: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=1917674&group_id=12997&atid=362997 Its just a cascade menu with a few options... since there's no tk_fontSelection dialog. Perhaps the user shouldn't be given the option to set whatever font they like for the console since only a few fonts are really suitable. I tried setting consolas to -11 (11 pixels). On my systems this is equivalent to 8pt - back to the originally very small size. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Pat Thoyts (patthoyts) Date: 2008-03-25 00:06 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=202636 Originator: NO The complaint wrt Consolas is a different issue - it would be preferable to have the console be able to display the standard Win32 font selection dialog and let the user choose a font and have it be remembered in the registry. In the meantime it may be that setting the font to -family Consolas -size -11 may help avoid being too small on large displays (note that really is 'minus 11') ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Goodwin Lawlor (glawlor) Date: 2008-03-16 19:24 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1323571 Originator: NO Having used the consolas font for a couple of days now, I think font size 11 would be better again for consolas rather than 10 (my screen res is 16080x1050). Does anyone think it would be possible to set a sensible size depending on the screen resolution and font family? Would be nice to be able to set the console font too (and save the default to the registry)... limited to New Courier, Consolas, Lucida Console etc. if available. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Goodwin Lawlor (glawlor) Date: 2008-03-14 04:35 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1323571 Originator: NO I've just got bitten by this bug- the cause was installing MS Office 2007 which installed the "Consolas" font. Consolas is also pre-installed on Vista. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolas Pre-install, my wish85 console had TkConsoleFont as {{New Courier} 10} Post-install: > console eval {font actual TkConsoleFont} -family Consolas -size 8 -weight normal -slant roman -underline 0 -overstrike 0 MS says it's "highly legible fonts designed for ClearType" on "programming environments"! It only become legible for me when I go > console eval {.console config -font {Consolas 10}} TkConsoleFont is set in tk/library/console.tcl to TkFixedFont {{New Courier} 10} unless ProFontWindows or Consolas are available. That's fine but the size is then set to 8. 10 would be better. Or else just keep TkFixedFont as the TkConsoleFont. See the screenshot attached. File Added: tiny.png ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Pat Thoyts (patthoyts) Date: 2007-12-10 12:16 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=202636 Originator: NO I managed to reproduce this and the cause appears to be failing to handle the case where SystemParametersInfo returns a failure code. We now check for this and skip the font assignments when this occurs which causes the missing named fonts to be created by the script in ttk/fonts.tcl which is a useful fallback. The cause of the failure of this API is having WINVER defined to something higher than your running platform. In my case I built this with MSVC9 which defaults WINVER to 0x0600 (Windows Vista) and testing the binary on Windows XP the size of the structure is wrong for the current platform and it rejects it. I've fixed the tkWin.h header to set the minimum target platform to Win98 (WINVER=0x0410) which is the lowest supported platform for tcl 8.5 now. This should fix the problem. Awaiting confirmation from the bug originator. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Konstantin Khomoutov (flatworm) Date: 2007-11-14 23:34 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1350198 Originator: YES Some new info: a friend of mine was kind to make some measures on an _English_ WinXP SP2 box (which normally works with the Russian locale). The observation is this: * When the system runs with locale set to "ru;Russian" the user experiences the "tiny fonts" problem in subject. The "language for non unicode programs" setting is set to "Russian" (thus enabling usage of cp1251 code-page for non-Unicode programs). * When the system is switched to the "en-us;English (United States)" locale (which is "native" to that system), the problem _remains_. The "language for non unicode programs" settings remain the same (Russian). * When the "language for non unicode programs" setting is reverted to the "English" (thus meaning selecting cp1252 code-page for non-Unicode programs), the problem _disappears_. System metrics were measured on each of these three steps. The only noticed difference was in the "ANSI_FIXED_FONT" metric: * With the "language for non unicode programs" setting set to "Russian" it was "Courier 9"; * With the same setting set to "English" it was "Courier 10". In other words, the only combinations of settings that vanished the problem was: English locale + English as the language for non-Unicode programs. So, to reproduce the problem one can use a standard WinXP SP2 with these three settings set to "Russian": * System locale; * Regional settings (possibly, won't hurt); * Language used for non-Unicode programs. A reboot is required for these settings to apply. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Jeffrey Hobbs (hobbs) Date: 2007-11-12 22:33 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=72656 Originator: NO I cannot repeat this using the configure/make build system with HEAD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Konstantin Khomoutov (flatworm) Date: 2007-11-12 16:35 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1350198 Originator: YES File Added: smallfonts.PNG ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Date: 2007-11-10 19:04 Message: Logged In: NO Tiny fonts in Windows console main menu Console window main menu has unreadable tiny fonts in Windows wish built with VC2005 using the standard makefile.vc (with OPTS=static).
