Category: 35. [tk_dialog] Group: obsolete: 8.4.14 >Status: Closed >Resolution: Duplicate Priority: 7 Private: No Submitted By: Matt Nichols (mtnichols) Assigned to: Jeffrey Hobbs (hobbs) Summary: selecting file from file dialog shuts down application Initial Comment: In windows XP, selecting a file on the Desktop using a tk file dialog will shut down the application. I found this bug using Python and the tkinter module but can reproduce this using wish.exe. to repeat: 1) start DOS console and cd to C:\Tcl\demos\Tk8.4 2) at prompt enter: wish widget.tcl - the Widget Demonstration Window opens 3) scroll to Common Dialogs and select 2. File selection dialog 4) click Browse button in file selection dialog 5) click Desktop button on left hand side of dialog 6) double click any .txt file - the file path is entered in entry field 7) step 4 and 5 is repeated so, click browse button again 8) click Desktop button again 9) just move cursor over a .txt file The dialog and whole application shuts down. Note: I could not reproduce this on Win 2000. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Rolf Ade (pointsman) Date: 2007-11-13 00:07 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=13222 Originator: NO See also bug 1538201. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Date: 2007-10-18 17:13 Message: Logged In: NO We've also found the bug reproducible in Notepad and in our own Tcl/Tk (Versino 8.4.13.0) application calling the tk_getOpenFile. Only reproducible on Windows XP - in our experience. Sorry for the previous post. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Date: 2007-10-18 17:07 Message: Logged In: NO fjakej;\ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Jeffrey Hobbs (hobbs) Date: 2007-02-20 01:06 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=72656 Originator: NO In fact, more digging indicates it may well be Adobe at fault. Someone willing to test repro with and without Adobe installed? Probably requires a full system reboot: http://xona.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=621&view=previous&sid=9bfc4856c7929a80e1799b54f66dab06 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Jeffrey Hobbs (hobbs) Date: 2007-02-20 00:59 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=72656 Originator: NO I think there is more to it than that. I can repro this, but get the following stack trace: SHELL32! 7ca5158e() SHELL32! 7cb2fe26() SHELL32! 7cb2ff6a() SHELL32! 7cb295b5() SHELL32! 7c9f208d() BROWSEUI! 75f81b9a() SHLWAPI! 77f69548() NTDLL! 7c927545() NTDLL! 7c927583() NTDLL! 7c927645() NTDLL! 7c92761c() KERNEL32! 7c80b683() and moving to Tk's thread, I see we are in GetFileNameW calling the Win32 API. I can't see what changes Tk has caused for this to occur. I think it only happens with XP SP2+. Some sort of security violation check? This appears to be a new issue in XP. In fact, a search for "GetFileName tooltip crash" on google actually shows some repititions. It appears to be some weird incompatibility with another program's shell explorer hooks. I see the following programs load dlls when an explorer tooltip is created: Acrobat, OpenOffice, perforce and several from Windows itself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Pat Thoyts (patthoyts) Date: 2007-02-20 00:25 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=202636 Originator: NO I tried this on Windows XP sp2 with notepad.exe and the same sequence of opening a text file on the Desktop and repeating will crash notepad. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Donal K. Fellows (dkf) Date: 2006-12-28 23:20 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=79902 Originator: NO Type of file doesn't matter (thankfully!) and it seems to be a property of the Desktop. Appears to be linked (somehow; I just see a timing correlation) in terms of timing to the popping up of the tooltip with the file details in. Don't know the Win dialog code well enough to hunt this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=112997&aid=1623257&group_id=12997 |
