If yes, at the command prompt does "ispell filename" result in ispell checking the file. If yes, ok you can use ispell, if not subsititute 'aspell' and try again. If one of the two then just find the plugin directory /usr/share/squirrelmail/plugins/squirrelspell under debian and follow in instructions in the INSTALL file. Whenevery you want to use a plugin it appears that should always check the plugin's directory to see if there is any special setup. Finally of course, run ./config.pl and turn it on.
