It may be the browser. In the early days of MP3s IE had an MP3 mime type setup and would download MP3s fine. Netscape didn't have a mime type setup and would assume the content was text. It would then helpfully (not) make sure every lf on its own was changed to a crlf. What your seeing could be your browser doing something simular.
