I'm not an expert on this, but it seems to me that if users are always using SM, there's no reason to enable imaps at all. As long as they can get web access, they can use SM securely from anywhere, because the webserver and imapd are running on the same machine. Is this true? Maybe you need to use https to secure the form submission? But if users need to get IMAP info in other programs, you would need to enable imaps. Please let me know if this is correct logic. I'm still not sure why the webserver and imap server running on the same machine would prevent a security problem with the submission of the form.
