[SM-USERS] Interesting problem

I ran out of disk space on the volume where squirrelmail is installed.  I
logged in and my preferences were gone.  I fixed the disk space problem
and the .prefs file was 0.

I restored from backup and everything is back to normal.  Why would the
prefs file be zeroed out?
