[SQLObject] DateCol - Earliest 1900

All,
I have been having some trouble with dates. I discover that dates
before 1900 are not stored in a DateCol object. Please can this be in
the documentation because both datetime and mxDateTime support years
back to about zero and possibly earlier. I guess I will have to write
my on set and get for these dates. Is there a specific reason why early
dates are not supported because  later date usage seems to go to 9999
and we are unlikely to record anything that far into the future.
(Although I am sure they said that in 1970 about the year 2000.)
