The SATA controller probably uses a (SCSI class) driver without SMART 
support.
Please post the output of "smartctl -i -r ioctl,2 /dev/hdX" for the SATA 
drive.

The WNASPI32.DLL from Adaptec's ASPI package depends on an installed 
ASPI32.SYS device driver.
Install it with "install.bat XP32" from the driver package.
As an alternative, it may be possible to use a self-contained 
WNASPI32.DLL like Nero ASPI Manager.
But both would only help for SCSI drives, not for SATA drives.
