The usual reason is either suspending or powering down the laptop while the test is in progress. Note that the laptop may be configured to 'go to sleep' after some period of keyboard inactivity. It won't know that the self-test is keeping the computing active, so it may decide that it's time to go to sleep even while your self-test is running!
