Jon, Please keep CCing the smartmontools-support list in your replies, so that we have a record there. Could you please try an experiment? Try accessing the device as you are doing, but use -d ata to tell smartmontools that it's an ATA device: smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda to access the disk that used to be /dev/hde, for example. If this works, the corresponding smartd.conf entry would also have -d ata for /dev/sda. Please try this with a current smartmontools release, not an old release, since I think at least at one point something was broken and you couldn't over-ride the device type like this.
