Found the comment I had missed before: # Comment out this line if you have also commented out TTY_GRAPHICS in config.h After making this change, I could successfully build without TTY_GRAPHICS and then the window options work properly. Then the build completed successfully. (BTW I had to define TTY_GRAPHICS otherwise it gave me stuff like: nttty.o(.text+0x2d):nttty.c: undefined reference to `ttyDisplay') However the display is not what it used to be. Now the status is in a narrow pane on the left, and the defaults.nh settings for the fonts etc. appear to be ignored. I had mixed results changing the defaults.nh file but never got the status window to move. It seems like some of the options are switched around. For example when I change align_status it moves the message window instead of the status window. Also the same problem afflicts the Options command in the game, not just defaults.nh.
