Each monster and each object and some other things like walls and doors etc. are assigned a tile number by both NetHack and Slash'EM (although the numbers differ between the two because each added monster shifts the tile numbers of all tiles that come after it by one). A 2D tileset is a collection of rectanglar bitmaps arranged in the same sequence as the tile numbers that the particular game in question is using. This means that when a window interface wants to display the tile for a giant ant it gets tile 0 out of the tileset and displays it on the screen. Thus it is possible to create a new tileset that has different bitmaps of possibly different sizes for each of the monsters, objects etc. which have a tile number assigned to them. It is not possible to create new tiles for things that don't have a tile number. For example, standard tilesets don't allow you to create different tiles for the corpses of different monsters since they all share the same tile number. The situation gets more complex in Slash'EM where 3D tilesets and transparent tilesets are supported and where the proxy windowing interface is used, but I don't think you need to worry about that. > can slash'em use an arbitary tile set?
