I'm not sure I understand it correctly, but what you seem to describe is some global (i.e. module level) variable that is initialized when the module is loaded and is modified when a document is read from a file. However it's not reset when the next document is loaded. This would indeed lead to incorrectly loaded documents in most cases, unless the the plugin is unloaded in-between.
