However, neither the MediaWiki code or the SMW code are anywhere near modular, MediaWiki likely being the bigger offender. They both follow the big ball of mud pattern and have a high degree of inseparability. Extracting or replacing any "component" (not that there are nicely bounded components) is going to be all but easy.
