For most practical purposes, this answer might be sufficiently accurate, but I would like to add that ?action=purge does *not* do the same job as a null-edit. There are two independent things that relate to these two activities: (1) the content of MediaWiki's page cache (and possibly of other caches like Squid, if used), (2) the content of the SMW annotation database. Calling ?action=purge will reset (1) but not (2). Using the SMWAdmin page or SMW_refreshLinks.php script will ensure that (2) is refreshed but not (1). It is possible to invalidate (1) completely (so that it is recomputed for all pages when viewed next) by doing a null edit to your LocalSettings.php (or by running touch LocalSettings.php on the command line).
