A little bit more detail on the "sadly underdocumented" bit: it isn't so much that the documentation is incomplete as the implementation itself; while what we have works for Unixish systems, we don't yet have the kind of support for MSDOS and (Old)Mac line endings, Win32 byte-order marks, and the like that would let us properly document things; additionally, the implementation is a little bit "smelly" in that there are multiple pieces of functionality that have to be implemented for external formats (FFI translations, string-to-octets, and stream translations, for example) that are not implemented even for all currently supported external formats.
