Not that I have the slightest idea either but you might have more luck
asking this on the CMUCL mailing list. If it's a part of SBCL that
none of the SBCL developers understands than very likely it's old
CMUCL code they haven't touched. I'm sure not all CMUCL developers are
subscribed to sbcl-devel.
