The space under my house.  I have no basement.  Just a space through which to 
crawl, literally, in order to access the underside of my floor, my plumbing, 
etc.

It's a pretty common arrangement here in the US.  Mine is tight even as 
crawlspaces go.  If I have a pencil in my back pocket, I'll break the point 
on a joist sure as the world.

You should try digging a drainage ditch in such a space sometime.
