To my mind, our usage of expand is quite at odds with the meaning of the word, which suggests making things longer rather than shorter. Our usage can only really be explained as "the opposite of collapse", it's not meaningful in itself, which is a bit of a defect. Certainly I can never remember what we're using expand to mean, except by thinking of it as the opposite of collapse. Merge/split seems like a better pair of antonyms, even if collapse is a better word than merge.) Chris |
