Davy, Recently I read a comment about Tony Faulkner, perhaps the most respected British recording engineer for his ability to recreate the original acoustical space of (non-amplified) performances. It said that he has been mastering his most recent recordings without dithering and they sound better! The only way I can figure to get away with that (and have it sound good) would be to use professional equipment doing 64 bit floating point calculations, pushing the rounding error into the sub-basement. Does that make sense? Given the fact that Gentoo and I believe some other distributions now support the Athlon XP64 chip in 64 bit mode, what are the hurdles to getting ReZound to work with 64 bit floats? I assume that some libraries would need to be upgraded first. It _might_ be an effective way to catapult ReZound past the other Linux sound editors and into direct competition with some serious pro equipment. Then again the difference might be inaudible. Just a random thought. John |
