Francesc - I think I answered my own question. I have to set it in the environment where I'll be running. Is there another way that this is accomplished? I have another Linux system where I have pytables installed, and LD_LIBRARY_PATH is not set, and the import works just fine. I installed pytables on that system (I think) using easy_install. I would prefer not to have to use environment variables, because I'll be running my code from a cron job, where account settings are frequently a problem...
