Well, I have to say I'm very impressed at how smooth this process was. I just compiled and installed SDL, SDL_net, SDL_mixer and PrBoom 2.2.3 on my SGI Indy running IRIX 6.5. Not an error in sight. It runs very slowly (as I expected) if I scale it up, and even slower in GL mode (the Indy XL-24 graphics has no texture memory or texture acceleration). In GL mode the colours were strangely dithered too, I don't know why that was. With software rendering I have no problems, sound works and everything. Only smooth enough in 320x200, though. One would think that the GL mode could be used to speed up some things if the platform and its limitations had been considered, but maybe not (I wonder if the XZ card had been faster with GL...). I should think the biggest bottleneck is the lack of optimization made by gcc on this architecture (as well, perhaps, as the lack of mips assembly where i386 assembly is used otherwise in the PrBoom code). I shall recompile with the MIPSpro compilers and see if that makes any difference, as soon as I can get ahold of them. Anyway, cool stuff. -- Stian Sletner |
