You are running into an effect called "I2C Edge Condition".

See "doc/I2C_Edge_Conditions" with the U-Boot (PPCBoot) sources.  The
U-Boot  code  implements  a  workaround  for  this  problem  on  some
processors (AFAIR on all using soft-i2c).
