Hi, I asked the same question some time ago. I suppose Chris is quite busy with some other projects because after a mail that he would come back to me, I never heard anything. I found another project ( http://memoranda.sourceforge.net/) that suited me so I don't think that I will be working on this one. Hi, I would be willing to help revive the project as well. I would even be willing to take over the project, if no one else wants to. So, I guess as far as I am concerned, who is interested in working on further developement, and Chris, do you still not have a problem with someone else taking over the project? Let me know what everyone else thinks. -- Brad Beglin Georgia Institute of Technology |

Hi, Is anyone still working on this project. The latest version is old but quit functional. I'd like to add some features such as i18n, preferences as having a default journal or always opening a new page when the program is opened, rich text editing, ... I noticed the SVN that is linked to on the website is not functioning anymore so how do I get the latest source code? I notice some people worked on it but no new version was released. I hope to revive the project as I didn't find a better open source journaling tool. Kind Regards, Jeroen |

You are welcome to help in the development of Powerjournal, although I don't quite get what you proposed with SVN. If you are serious, then start by joining the development mailing list and discuss your ideas. There's only a couple people on it, but it would help us all communicate. Powerjournal-devel mailing list info https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/powerjournal-devel Commits will be sent to this list soon. (I am setting it up now) You can get familiar with the latest PowerJournal code using using SVN or a web browser here: http://arrowood.myip.org/websvn/ (web browser only) http://arrowood.myip.org/svn/public/ (web browser or svn client) I'll give you write access when you are familiar with the code and have changes to add. The latest code includes various bug fixes and one major new feature: Encryption of private entries. There is a bug somewhere that is blanking out encrypted entries when you view them. I haven't looked for it yet... BTW - Nothing wrong with c#, I do it all day and love it! Chris Arrowood |

You should make a powerjournal-commits email list. Use syncmail to email diffs to anyone that subscribes. Do you know if this is possible with SVN, does it still have the commitinfo administrative file in CVSROOT? p.s. My server is almost set-up. I had a bunch of trouble with the MBR. I decided to wipe it and start from scratch. I wish everyone would do partition tables and boot record stuff the same way. :( > -----Original Message----- > From: pow...@li... > [mailto:pow...@li...] On > Behalf Of Chris Arrowood > Sent: Thursday, August 19, 2004 8:47 PM > To: pow...@li... > Subject: [Powerjournal-devel] Commits 2004-08-19 > > FYI > > Commits 2004-08-19 > ------------------------------------------------ > - updated hsqldb lib to version 1.7.2.3 > - fixed NullPointerException on exit (thrown by hsqldb; fixed > by upgrading) > - commented command broken by new hsqldb: //resultSet.setFetchSize(x); > - added SHUTDOWN COMPACT sql command for hsqldb on exit > - misc personal JCreator project file changes > - misc trivial changes > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > SF.Net email is sponsored by Shop4tech.com-Lowest price on > Blank Media 100pk Sonic DVD-R 4x for only $29 -100pk Sonic > DVD+R for only $33 Save 50% off Retail on Ink & Toner - Free > Shipping and Free Gift. > http://www.shop4tech.com/z/Inkjet_Cartridges/9_108_r285 > _______________________________________________ > Powerjournal-devel mailing list > Pow...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/powerjournal-devel > |

A NullPointerException is being thrown > when I exit the program... > java.lang.NullPointerException 1) hhmmm; I did duplicate this but only in the head, not in the last release. That code has changes in it since the last released versoin to encrypt the users entry and description fields in the db if they are private. Something is obviously messed up in that code. I'll look into this more tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up. 2) NullPointerException: Yeah, this was being thrown by the hSQLdb lib and was (I think) beyond my control. All I could do it catch it (which I wasn't.) I upgraded the hSQLdb lib tonight and it is gone. I also added some code to cleanly shut down the hsqldb at exit. You probably should either use the source control or get a fresh dump before you start coding ;-) FWIW, hsqldb is used to 1) Always to store config settings 2) to store your journal itself UNLESS the settings above indicate an alternate location (currently only a mysql server.) (They used to give this lite "Now" version away for free, It was slightly crippled, like not being able to remove their logo.) I just checked their website, They are on version 6.0 now with no free version. My 4.5 version is updated with a recent JVM they provided a couple of months ago so we can use it for a while. The version I have does not mention upgrades so I have always maintained that you should remove any previous version before upgrading. Now that there is not a free version of IA available, I am interested in alternatives. I have heard of, but not used, Java Web Start. It is worth looking into. We also might be able to use Nullsoft's NSIS for windows and just provide a zip or tgz for Linux... assuming we can bundle the JVM using NSIS. Whatever; I do not feel strongly one way or the other about this (until it's researched anyway.) If we do not find anything, I am fine doing the packaging, but at some point we should find another solution (just to keep current, not that I mind the packaging.) Chris |

What I tend to do at work with CVS is create branches for new features. We do this because we want to keep the HEAD stable so that we can deploy a production version at any time, and important bug fixes and features can be put into production without waiting for other developers to finish their features, and stabalize them. Then, when we know that the feature/fix is stable, we merge it back into the HEAD. Does this sound like a good approach, or do you want to go with the standard mechanism of using the HEAD for development? |

How does this work Chris? Do you have a licensed copy? If so, then I assume you'll be doing all the install packaging, eh? Perhaps we should also provide a Java Web Start functionality for auto upgrades? I've never done this, but it looks kinda cool. :) Will Install Anywhere do upgrades by replacing files properly? Or is an uninstall required first? |

Thanks Chris. I'm going to be setting up my Linux server/workstation soon (my other one died). Until then I'm not going to bother with any development. I don't want to bother installing CVS, or SVN on my windows box. :) Chris Arrowood wrote: > As requested, here is a zip of the latest. I am replying to this via the list so others in the future can see what we did. As far as the other developer (Simon), I haven't asked if he is okay with me posting his previous email on this list so I will forward it to you privately in another email so you can know what he was working on. Yeah, it looks like you put a lot of work into it. That's what I didn't want to do! :) I know what it takes starting a new program, it's a whole lot of work. I prefer maintenance programming if possible. Of course it really sucks to do maintenance programming on a lowsy piece of software too though. I'm working on a relatively large java program at work that was written by lowsy programmers. They have no concept of object oriented design. > >> I'm thinking of adding some more features to it. I think, to start anyhow, I'll just use RDBM style searching. That way it's up and running right away. Then I can get into BTREE stuff afterwards. I'll probably do the BTREE stuff in C and use JNI to tie them together. That's what I did with my Java backup program to be able to backup permissions. It's a really sucky backup program though, not very well designed. It was one of my first java GUI programs which I wanted to get running right away. :) You can check it out on sourceforge if you like.
