I just tried your patch on my win2k geforce2 GTS machine
and I get approx a 10% slowdown with this pathch compared 
to the original code

What would be really neat is if all the leafs were sorted 
by their respective state requirements as they were loaded
then we could introduce push/pop state nodes to potentially 
control many leafs at once

unfortunately I can't really think of an easy way todo this
