Hi, I wonder if anyone has written (or is writing) a driver for the Hokuyo URG laser range finder? Since the URG returns 768 points per scan, presumably this would involve modifying the laser interface to increase the value of PLAYER_LASER_MAX_SAMPLES (401 by default). Would increasing this value break anything else? For information, the Hokuyo URG-04LX is a small (50x50x70mm, 150g) short range (up to 4m) laser rangefinder. It is low power (500mA @ 5V), high resolution (1024 points per revolution) and wide angle (240 degrees). Hi, player cvs has this driver included, if you need a driver for player 1.6 I can upload it to my website. My solution to the range problem for 1.6 was to only return alternate scans and for cvs to increase the value in player.h. Hi everyone, I just got a URG laser scanner and I am trying to run it under linux. I am not using player but I took the urg drivers that are in player 2.0 (could not find any official driers from hokuyo!!). Everything looks fine, /dev/ttyS0 opens, but there is no data coming from the file descriptor. (When set to non-blocking the errno is 11:Resource temporarily unavailable) Any idea why? Before this a "magic" string is sent to the scanner: "G00076801\n", I am not so much into serial port programming, so I will be very grateful if anyone can shed some light on that too :) And lastly does anyone know if I can find a usb driver for the urg? As long as you have the acm or cdc-acm kernel module loaded, the URG should be detected automatically as ttyacm0 (or possibly ttyacm1 etc). I believe the driver in 2.0 assumes that you are using the USB connection, so it won't work if you try to connect through serial. It wouldn't take much work to do this though. Regarding the connection string, there is a document that describes the communication protocol. There should also be a sample project that can help you work out the correct commands. Hello! I am trying to write a little client application, which is in charge of data logging, in a format that is convenient for the persons working in the same lab as me. I have to write down time stamps, and I am trying to do that for a laser and a position interface (sick and odometry values, in fact). I wasn't able to find how to get those timestamps. Does anyone know where I missed the point? Regards, Pierre P.S. I have already written the same app with the C++ lib, which was successful. the playerc_device_t structure has the timestamp in it, im not sure exactly how this is updated but I would assume it has the timestamp of the last processed message in it... the playerc_client_t has a member datatime which should have the timestamp for the last data recieved for each individual device. Hi, is there a Windows driver for the Hokuyo Laser? I'm programming in a project and I have to use Windows but haven't found a driver yet. I have a driver for Linux and I think it's not difficult to rewrite it for Windows, but I don't know how to communicate with the USB port under windows (like dev/ttsyACM0 under Linux) Has anybody an idea? Hi, The laser comes with software for interfacing to it in windows, if you do not have a copy of this I suggest you contact Hokuyo or check out their website. In windows I dont recall *exactly* what happens with the ACM devices but from memory they appear as simply another COM port (COM5?) I've done some playing with the laser and pmap/amcl, seemed to work okay, no real numbers and I havent used the SICK for comparison. Ill be interested to hear what you think of it once youve had time to try it properly. Dear all, I have bought one URG-04LX and I can read that it seems to be very good. However, with the software provided, I have no signal going to it. I want to apply this laser scanner to do 3D object reconstruction b y mounting it a a robotic arm on top of a Pioneer platform. The problem is twofold: I do not have proper documentation that would help troubleshoot and the supplier is not responding to my messages. Do you have any suggestion on how to use the USB link ? To use the laser via USB you still need to apply power via the other plug. Dear all, I thank Tapio for the very useful answer. The 5VDC voltage source has to come through the serial link, otherwise it does not work. It is quite important to notice that the Hokuyo URG laser range scanner cannot be powered by the USB physical connection. I have measured a 650 ma rush current at sensor start-up which exceeds the USB capacities. Another one was also difficult with this snesor type, you have to unzip files which are compressed by a very esoteric standard. Then, care should be to properly install the USB driver. After that, all worked well. Now, I have a new problem related to configuration. As it is required on the readme file provided with the URG-Configurer, I have updated to SCIP 2.0 and now I cannot use the sensor anyhow. Has anyone found a simple solution to that or will I have to return the sensor to Hokuyo for arranging it like it is advocated by Sentek, supplier of this sensor in Europe and North America ?
