<aio.h> defines the calls aio_<read,write,...> you can check to see if they're supported by testing the macro #ifdef _POSIX_ASYNCHRONOUS_IO i haven't tried it. i have a good book "POSIX.4 programming for the real world" by Bill Gallmeister (great name) that is all about POSIX real-time. I got it from the USC bookstore.
