All Gazebo entities (bodies, geoms, models) get a pointer to the physics engine used which they use to make calls regarding the physics. These entities shouldn't be build around a particular physics engine (ODE). This patch enables Gazebo to accept other physics engines ( Bullet, PhysX ). All that is needed is the implementation of a class that inherits the class PhysicsEngine and overrides the virtual methods. (I have started working on this and I can produce patches.)
