I've noticed in the last couple versions (.73-.74) of gaim/w32 that the visual notifications of messages aren't happening or at least I'm not noticing them even when I'm looking for them. I don't use sound based notifications because they are too disruptive to my focus and those around me. I can't use pop-window-to-top on new IM because I'm somewhat disabled and use speech recognition. It really sucks to have focused ripped away from your application that you're dictating into and have the text sent out over IM to ghod knows who. It's even worse if the text has recognition errors that totally change the meaning... ;-) what I want is a fairly high contrast flash on the taskbar that lasts for a configurable number of seconds and then leaves the icon in a "message waiting" state but no longer flashes. It might be nice to also have the systray icon also change state if a message is waiting because my taskbar frequently gets rather crowded with 20 plus application windows. My memory says that's what had been there back around .70ish so it's entirely possible that I am being a clueless twit and missing some configuration field. Overall though, I am rather impressed. It's a nice IM app and it's clear you have put decent chunk of energy into making it work well. I have not had much luck with IRC but then again I haven't put much energy into figuring out how to make things work there. ---eric |
