It is a pain ... but it is doable.  Here's how I do it ... the trick
being to use the "show original" option in Gmail.

When viewing a mail message, click on the small blue triangle next to
the "Reply" link in the upper right corner of the e-mail pane. That
offers the "Show Original" option, so click on it.  A new window will
open up with the original e-mail complete with almost all headers.
Use your browser "File>Save-Page-As" option to save it somewere.

For some odd reason the "Original" format does not include a
"From " header ... so it isn't quite in "mbox" format.  You need
to replace line 1 (which for possibly some other strange reason
consists of 255 spaces) with something that looks like an
Mbox "From" line.

Now you have an mbox file that "git-am" will accept.
