I need to cut a purchase order for a new laptop for work by the end of June. My intention is to get some kind of X86 (Pentium M or Athlon64) machine that will dual boot WinXP(needed for legacy/administrative stuff, sigh) and Linux (probably Fedora n with several alternative kernels for research purposes). I want something for which the ACPI implementation is done well enough to be able to run and do development work on hardware performance counter tools, including oprofile. One other constraint. I love lots of pixels, so a UXVGA display is highly desirable. Weight is not really a consideration since the only exercise I get related to work is lugging my computer bag around. Recommendations? Manufacturers and models to avoid? -- Rob Fowler Associate Director, HiPerSoft Senior Research Scientist Dept. of Computer Science, MS-132 Rice University, 6100 Main Street Houston, TX 77005 713 348-5709 |
