Sounds like you are confused as to what a true SSL VPN is. The products produced by Whale Communications, Aventail, etc... are likely not true VPN's. They are just web apps offered via HTTPS. Some may have the ability to tunnel ip traffic back over the HTTP connection, but in the end all it is is a web server and a java client program. They are really not doing much more then that. OpenVPN is a true VPN in the meaning of the word. It uses the SSL library for encryption and authentication (which is the same library web servers use to encrypt traffic) but it was built from the ground up to do nothing but route and carry IP traffic. I don't know about those other products, but OpenVPN was built from the ground up to do one thing, and do it well. What specifially are you looking to do? Tom |
