I have been working on getting all the .mdl files compiling from source files and ran into trouble with flame.mdl, which in our case has an animated skin group. An animated skin group is a series of skins that automatically cycles, but appears to be one skin as far as the QuakeC is concerned. First I had to update skinless to read past the skin groups properly to get at the texture coordinate data. Then I discovered that I still couldn't compile the model with modelgen. It turns out modelgen never did write skin group data - even though the Quake engine does and modelgen has partial support for skin groups - because none of the Quake models actually used the feature. So I went ahead and implemented skin group writing in modelgen.
