This question would probably get a better response from the users mailing list. There are several possibilities, but we'd need to know what you're trying to monitor. Can you describe the nature of the service? If you were to manually check and verify that the service is running, what check/s would you perform? net-snmp can do many things. If you want to monitor a running process, you can (within certain limits). It can even send a trap if the process dies. Many other things are possible by way of the 'pass' and 'pass-persist' features of net-snmp. Read up on them. I had a few instances where I required monitoring of metric data that couldn't be presented remotely on it's own. I wrote a wrapper script in python that used the net-snmp::pass-persist feature. This article summarizes it nicely: http://www.dreness.com/wikimedia/index.php?title=Net_SNMP and provides examples. If you require a more robust script, the example shown is a great starting point and there are many other examples on the 'net that you can derive a custom script from. Thanks, Steve.
