To the OpenEV discussion list: Our company, WHPA Inc., is a hydrological consulting firm based in Bloomington, Indiana. We recenty completed a project in which we delineated 467 wellhead protection areas using our groundwater flow model, ModAEM (an analytic element code soon to be released under the GPL, http://modaem.sourceforge.net). We initially were interested in OpenEV only for the final presentation of results, since the client wanted them in shapefiles, but after investigating OpenEV we decided to use it for preprocessing and visualization during project execution. Our pre- and post-processing was accomplished by our own Python scripts which used the Shapelib extensions. The whole combination worked very well, both while building models and during the final (manual) delineation steps. This was pretty remarkable, given that the modeler who did the bulk of the work had no prior experience with OpenEV and much of the manual work of drawing polygons for the final results was done by summer interns with little GIS or Linux experience. OpenEV also simplified the job of quality-assurance checking once the manual work was complete. We're very pleased with OpenEV (and of course Python) and we are now embarking on the development of analytical tools which are to be plugged-into OpenEV. The combination of Python with OpenEV is a very powerful one for environmental modeling -- you can accomplish a lot with much flexibility and low cost.
