Bugs item #2802433, was opened at 2009-06-07 03:53 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by vmrexx You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=684730&aid=2802433&group_id=119701 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 7 Private: No Submitted By: LesK (vmrexx) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: 4.0 accesses the internet for random DNS Initial Comment: I'm running W2K Version 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4 with the free version of Zone Alarm: ZoneAlarm version:7.0.483.000 TrueVector version:7.0.483.000 Driver version:7.0.483.000 Every time I run a Rexx program, ZA warns me: xxx is attempting to access the Internet ... and gives me the IP address ending with: :DNS If I run one of the sample programs, like qtime, from the command window then xxx=Open Object Rexx. If I double-click on my THE shortcut from the desktop, then xxx=THE. I've already allowed the localhost IP, so that doesn't appear to be the trigger for the other warnings. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: LesK (vmrexx) Date: 2009-06-18 06:20 Message: I can't find how to attach to an existing problem, so here's the log: ZoneAlarm Logging Client v7.0.483.000 Windows 2000-5.0.2195-Service Pack 4-SP type, date, time, source, destination, transport (Security) type, date, time, virus name, file name,mode,e-mail id (Anti-Virus) type, date, time, source, destination, action, service (IM Security) type, date, time, source, destination, program, action (Malicious Code Protection) type,date,time,action,product,file,event,subevent,class,data,data,... THE still behaves the same at startup, giving a ZA alert. HOWEVER I can RUN programs within THE and get NO alerts. BUT when I execute programs from the command box I always get alerts! Note that this behavior is almost the reverse of what I reported to Rick earlier! I found the ZA log and will attach it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: LesK (vmrexx) Date: 2009-06-18 04:44 Message: Mark, Thanks SO much for taking a look at this! You didn't, however, replicate my environment, since ZA version 8 won't run on W2K. Note that the free ZA doesn't provide a lot of user controls. The ZA log viewer doesn't show the alerts and I can't find the raw log. I'll install the newest beta and try again and see if I can corral more info. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Mark Miesfeld (miesfeld) Date: 2009-06-17 19:10 Message: Les, I installed the free Zone Alarm and worked with the ooRexx beta directly downloaded from Source Forge, and I don't see anything unexpected. ZA popups up alerts saying things like The Open Object Rexx Interface is trying to access the Internet Application: rexx.exe Destination IP: 127.0.0.1:Port 43332 I ran the whole test suite and get the alerts for any executable that tries to talk with rxapi (This info is for Rick, for instance there is an alert for rexxinstance.exe.) All the alerts list 127.0.0.1 with the correct port 43332. I downloaded and installed THE and see the same thing. Start THE and you get an alert that The Hessling Editor is attempting to connect to the Internet. Again it is 127.0.0.1:43332 I don't see anything here that is an ooRexx bug. I tried this with the latest beta ooRexx 4.0.0.4800 and this version of Zone Alarm: Zone Alarm: ZoneAlarm version:8.0.298.000 TrueVector version:8.0.298.000 Driver version:8.0.298.000 As far as the :DNS ending goes, I believe they are using that for the well-known port. For instance, the alert I got for Outlook had Destination IP: 75.180.132.75:POP3 although really the well-known port name is domain not DNS. 1.) Zone Alarm keeps a more detailed log than just what they put in the popu up. Could you attach that log to this bug so we can maybe get a little more information on these alerts. 2.) The version of Zone Alert I just got is newer than what you have, maybe this is a bug in Zone Alert. Since it is free, could you try up-grading and see if the problem goes away. All in all, the explanation seems to more likely be what Rick suggested. A bug or mis-configuration in Zone Alarm, or a configuration problem on your network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: LesK (vmrexx) Date: 2009-06-07 22:55 Message: Well, this is interesting! When I run your program from the command box, all is well and I get the right answer: IP address for localhost is 127.0.0.1 When I run it while editing it in THE, with the RUN macro that Mark gave me, it gives me a ZA alert THE FIRST TIME, none thereafter unless I quit and restart THE. ipconfig /all does not reveal any addresses that are alerting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Rick McGuire (bigrixx) Date: 2009-06-07 17:47 Message: Les, this is just an attempt to gather some more symptom information, since at this point, I have no theories that can explain the behavior you're seeing, except for maybe a messed up network or Zone Alarm configuration. To start, could you run the following program using ooRexx 3.2.0 and let me know if you get the same ZA alerts? call rxfuncadd "SockLoadFuncs", "rxsock", "SockLoadFuncs" call SockLoadFuncs call sockGetHostByName "localhost", "address." say "IP address for localhost is" address.addr Secondly, could you issue the command ipconfig /all and check to see if the DNS servers in your IP config match any of the addresses for the alerts you are seeing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: LesK (vmrexx) Date: 2009-06-07 04:01 Message: Raise priority to 7. This is a show-stopper for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=684730&aid=2802433&group_id=119701 |
