Ganja, here's how to get the Tri count from max: Go to your utilities panel, click more, find Polygon Counter. A window should pop up, pick "count triangles" instead of polys. Also, if you can draw (or your bro is available) can you see if you can make some cool concept characters or monsters to model from? Like the side/front blueprint pics.
