Whenever I launch Notepad++, I see that all 5 Macro buttons on the toolbar are lit (i.e. none of them are greyed out).
If I then hit the 'Stop' button, 2 buttons are then lit: the 'Stop' button and the 'Run a Macro Multiple Times' button. This makes no sense to me.
If I then hit the 'Stop' button again, then finally the state of the buttons changes to what I expect: only the 'Start Recording' button and the 'Run a Macro Multiple Times' button are lit up.
At that point if I quit Notepad++ and start it again, the whole cycle repeats again.

I've created an Issue for this in the Github repo.
