LesB on IRC reported that setting community to a list caused an ARRAY to be used for the community string. Possibly a bug. Verify this.

I suspect LesB was trying to use the global "community" setting's list behaviour inside the "snmp_auth" setting, which won't work. I've updated the Configuration docs to make it clear how to emulate the desired behaviour.
