in 1996 I used to access Mac via NFS (before I learn about netatalk)

I thought it was a client, but it's a server. Just use linux to put your files on the mac (rsync may be used this way to 
update your files)

The point is that the old Mac OS was a highly propietary system. The new
OS X is very cooperative, but you will not find many willing to spend
their time on developing tools to allow interoperability with old style
Mac OS, even Apple gave up this approach. So I really advice you not to
spend your time on that. Maybe you will find another way like classic
Mac OS clients for backup software with servers running on Linux, but I
am prettey sure that it won't be mounting your Appleshare volume on the
ix box.
